Hoka Mafate THREE2
As anyone whose worn cargo shorts knows– pockets are good. Whether you’re carrying a bottle of Faygo, your favorite flavor of Zyn, or 55 burgers and 55 fries, you can never have too much storage.
But if you’re looking for footwear with pockets, you need to consult to the queen of quirk– Nicole McLaughlin. Known for her off-the-wall designs ranging from gardening tools on Vans to condiments on Crocs, McLaughlin is partnering with Hoka for her second collaboration of the Mafate THREE2, the classic trail shoe with a detachable gaiter that provides storage and style in one head-turning package.

We were fans of the first release, but this one takes it to the next level. The white/neon yellow base colorway with silver accents looks like a school crossing guard came correct to an Andy Warhol factory party. The four-in-one gaiter system features a Nicole McLaughlin signature tag and is constructed from a woven ETPU material which keeps out dirt and debris, whether you’re in Boulder or Brooklyn (really the same place, but still).
Our favorite part? The five utility pockets, which can hold gels, hydration packets, or better yet– one lighter and four packs of firecrackers, which is exactly what I will use it for. The cinched quick lace-style opening at the entry and aggressive Vibram outsole provide a secure fit and traction on various terrains.
As for as collaborations go, this is a good one, with a lot of actually cool and interesting features that make it both useful and– more importantly– fun. It’s what collabs should do– melding both parties’ personalities into a unique product that elevates the original footwear.
The creative campaign for this collaboration is inspired by Nicole’s hobby of birding in New York City, something she took up during the COVID pandemic. It features Nicole birding in Prospect Park, shot by David Brandon Greeting, and styled by Gramparents. In support of New York City’s local birding community, Nicole and Hoka will be making a donation to the NYC Audubon.
The Hoka x Nicole McLaughlin Mafate THREE2 with its custom Crag box, will be available for purchase beginning June 14, 2024 at hoka.com for $250.
